It happened on my twenty-seventh  birthday in a private dining room high above downtown Chicago. Crystal chandeliers glowed overhead while the city shimmered beyond the glass walls.

My grandmother, Eleanor Bennett, sat beside me with her silver hair arranged in an elegant twist.

Ethan stared at him.

“It is.”

The color drained from Patricia’s face.

Ethan moved toward me.

Patricia grabbed the top page.

“I have never seen this account.”

Ethan became perfectly still.

“I did no such thing!” Patricia shouted.

Victor placed a signature authorization form beside the bank records.

Patricia turned toward her son.

Patricia sank into a chair.

Patricia looked at me.

I believed her.

Samuel handed Ethan a notice of immediate legal action.

I met his eyes.
