It is produced in the testes from\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/germ-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">germ cells<\/a>. Upon reaching\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/puberty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">puberty<\/a>, a man produces millions of\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0every day. A\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0is very small, about 0.05 mm long. A mature\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0cell contains a head and a short tail. This head has the genetic material of the male. The\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0is a haploid, which means it contains only 23\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/chromosomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chromosomes<\/a>, unlike the 46\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/chromosomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chromosomes<\/a>\u00a0found in other cells of the body. This is because during fertilisation, the semen fuses with the egg, the woman\u2019s reproductive cell, which is also haploid, to form a\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/zygote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zygote<\/a>\u00a0which has 46\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/chromosomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chromosomes<\/a>. The\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/zygote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zygote<\/a>\u00a0later implants itself in the\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/uterus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">uterus<\/a>\u00a0of the female, becomes the embryo which, if all is well, will develop into a baby. The process of a germ cell in the testes developing into a fully mature semen cell, capable of fertilising an egg, involves a number of steps and the whole process takes about 2.5 months.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Production of\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0and semen<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The testes have a system of tiny tubes called\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/seminiferous-tubules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seminiferous tubules<\/a>. These tubes contain simple round\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/germ-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">germ cells<\/a>\u00a0at birth. Once the male reaches\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/puberty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">puberty<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/testosterone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">testosterone<\/a>\u00a0(the principle male sex hormone), in combination with other hormones, known as\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/androgen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">androgens<\/a>, stimulates the development of the\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/germ-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">germ cells<\/a>\u00a0into\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0cells. Once developed, the\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0cells move, first into the\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/epididymis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">epididymis<\/a>, and then 5 weeks later, into the\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/vas-deferens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vas deferens<\/a>, which is also known as the\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0duct. The\u00a0<a class=\"text-gray-500\" href=\"https:\/\/nabtahealth.com\/glossary\/sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm<\/a>\u00a0cells mix with seminal fluid from the seminal vesicles and prostate gland to form semen. The semen is what enters the female body to fuse with the egg for fertilisation when ejaculated.
