The race for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination may be more complicated than many think, as potential candidates other than JD Vance appear to be jockeying for a run.<\/p>\n

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) appeared skeptical Tuesday when asked whether the vice president was sincere in offering unusually complimentary remarks about him, as speculation grows that the two Republicans could eventually compete for the White House in 2028.<\/p>\n

During an interview with CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins, Cruz was shown video of Vance responding to questions about potential Republican presidential candidates during a Sept. 3 White House press briefing.<\/p>\n

Vance had urged Republicans to put presidential ambitions aside until after the November midterm elections, but he also offered praise for Cruz.<\/p>\n

Vance described the Texas senator as \u201ca very authentic and likable guy\u201d and said he was sure Cruz would \u201cdo great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collins asked Cruz what he made of the comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate the kind words from the Vice President,\u201d Cruz responded, while agreeing with Vance that Republicans should be concentrating on the congressional elections currently less than two months away. ([CNN Transcripts][2])<\/p>\n

But when Collins asked whether he believed Vance actually meant the compliment, Cruz was notably noncommittal.<\/p>\n

Collins then asked Cruz whether he believed Vance would make a strong presidential candidate in 2028.<\/p>\n

Cruz went on to say there would be \u201cplenty of time\u201d to discuss the next presidential race once the midterms were finished.<\/p>\n

The exchange comes as Cruz increasingly leaves little doubt about his continuing interest in the presidency, even though he has stopped short of formally announcing another campaign.<\/p>\n

During an Aug. 26 appearance on Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick\u2019s podcast, Cruz openly acknowledged his ambitions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no secret that I want to be president,\u201d Cruz said, while adding that \u201ctime will tell\u201d whether he actually enters the 2028 contest.<\/p>\n

Cruz previously sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, emerging as Donald Trump\u2019s strongest remaining rival during the latter stages of the primary campaign.<\/p>\n

He won 11 states, including the Iowa caucuses and his home state of Texas, before suspending his campaign in May 2016. Cruz eventually endorsed Trump ahead of that year\u2019s general election.<\/p>\n

A decade later, Cruz is again positioning himself to participate in the debate over the Republican Party\u2019s future after Trump.<\/p>\n

During a recent MS NOW interview, Cruz rejected the suggestion that Republicans had already settled on Vance as Trump\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no,\u201d Cruz said when asked whether the party had coalesced behind the vice president.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s going to be a full discussion about who we are and what we believe,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Cruz said that discussion would likely center on fundamental disagreements over economic and foreign policy.<\/p>\n

He has advocated a more traditional conservative approach to limited government and has argued that tariffs should primarily be used as leverage to open foreign markets rather than become a permanent feature of economic policy.<\/p>\n

On foreign affairs, Cruz has also taken positions that at times differ from Vance\u2019s more restrained approach to overseas military involvement, particularly in debates surrounding Iran and America\u2019s role abroad.<\/p>\n

Those differences could become significant if both men ultimately seek the Republican nomination.<\/p>\n

Vance has not formally announced a presidential campaign and has repeatedly said Republicans should focus on the 2026 elections before discussing 2028.<\/p>\n

During his Sept. 3 White House briefing, he gave essentially the same message when questioned about Cruz and other Republicans whose names have surfaced in presidential speculation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you care about the country,\u201d Vance said, Republicans should concentrate on the midterms rather than \u201ca job a few years from now.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump has similarly avoided formally designating a preferred successor.<\/p>\n

Asked in August about a possible Cruz candidacy, Trump called the senator \u201cvery talented\u201d and \u201ca very good friend\u201d but stopped short of endorsing a 2028 bid.
