I didn\u2019t argue. I got dressed, pulled out his suitcase, and picked up my phone. After four years of putting up with his family, he still had no idea what document I had secretly prepared.<\/p>\n

The bucket hit me before I was fully awake. One second I was warm beneath the blankets on my thirty-eighth birthday; the next, ice-cold water slammed into my face while my husband stood over me grinning.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet up,\u201d Hera snapped. \u201cMy mom, my sister, and the kids will be here in half an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

For three seconds, I couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n

Water dripped from my hair onto the hardwood floor. My pajamas clung to my skin. Hera tossed the empty plastic bucket beside the bed as casually as if he had watered a plant.<\/p>\n

His sister Michelle borrowed my car and returned it with a dent. Her children had destroyed my home office while Hera laughed and called me uptight.<\/p>\n

Every holiday became theirs. Every vacation included them. Every boundary I set became proof that I was \u201cselfish.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPacking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor where?\u201d<\/p>\n

I folded three of his shirts neatly. \u201cYou\u2019ll find out.\u201d<\/p>\n

His smile disappeared. \u201cAzalea, don\u2019t start your drama today.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

Drama.<\/i>\u00a0That was what Hera called every consequence he didn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n

What he didn\u2019t know was that six months earlier, after discovering he had secretly used our joint account to pay nearly $18,000 of Lana\u2019s debts, I had met with attorney Rachel Vance.<\/p>\n

What he didn\u2019t know was that the house wasn\u2019t marital property. My grandmother had purchased it for me before the wedding through a protected family trust.<\/p>\n

And what Hera definitely didn\u2019t know was that yesterday afternoon, I had signed the final document terminating his legal right to occupy it.<\/p>\n

At 5:19 A.M., I zipped his suitcase. Then I picked up my phone.<\/p>\n

Hera folded his arms. \u201cWho are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled for the first time that morning. \u201cThe people who are going to help you leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hera laughed. Actually laughed. \u201cYou\u2019re kicking me out? From my own house?\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, headlights swept across the front windows. Lana had arrived early. Of course she had.<\/p>\n

Seconds later the front door opened without a knock. Lana marched in carrying grocery bags, followed by Michelle and her two noisy teenagers.<\/p>\n

Behind her, Michelle rolled her eyes. \u201cOh God. Is she having another mood?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hera pointed toward me. \u201cShe thinks she can throw me out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room exploded with laughter.<\/p>\n

Lana put a hand dramatically against her chest. \u201cThrow you out of your own home?\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence lasted perhaps two seconds.<\/p>\n

Then Michelle snorted. \u201cAzalea, you literally live here because Hera married you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was interesting. Because I had bought the furniture. I had paid the property taxes. And I had covered nearly seventy percent of our household expenses while Hera poured his salary into motorcycles, gambling apps, and his mother\u2019s emergencies.<\/p>\n

Lana stepped closer. \u201cYou\u2019ve always been ungrateful. Hera could have married someone younger. Someone who understood family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hera smiled at that. A month earlier, that sentence would have hurt. That morning, it sounded like evidence.<\/p>\n

I opened my phone. \u201cHera, your suitcase is by the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face hardened. \u201cYou\u2019re not ordering me around.\u201d<\/p>\n
