As he bares it all (pun not intended),\u00a0psychologist Bill Johnson\u00a0spoke his classic\u00a0HuffPo<\/em>\u00a0op-ed\u00a0piece on the complex issue of stereotypes, challenging preconceptions about size, and the quest for self-acceptance in the Black community.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a look at the \u201cBlack men are bigger\u201d stereotype<\/h2>\n

\u201cI have a problem with my dick size\u2026it\u2019s not big and I want it to be! \u2026\u00a0I\u2019m also Black, and the \u2018word\u2019 is all Black men have a large phallus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Psychologist Bill Johnson in his Huffington Post op-ed<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Johnson, he doesn\u2019t know exactly how large he is because he\u2019s never actually measured. If he had to guess, though, Johnson says he\u2019d probably land in the\u00a0\u201caverage\u201d category. But the real problem, Johnson points out, isn\u2019t the size of a penis at all. Instead, it\u2019s the racist stereotype that because of his skin color he\u2019s supposed to be bigger, thicker, longer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have internalized the racist notion that Black men have big dicks\u2026which has its roots in European racism, used to justify slavery and racial oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bill Johnson continues to drop truth bombs in his Huffington Post op-ed<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Think about that: a trained psychologist still felt insecure because society programmed him to believe Black men must be hung like horses. Johnson\u2019s personal truth highlights a bigger problem that many of us (even Black men themselves) have unknowingly bought into a lie that\u2019s literally centuries old.<\/p>\n

What can be done about the \u201cBlack men are bigger\u201d myth?<\/h2>\n

The fantasy of the super-endowed Black man didn\u2019t pop up out of nowhere, though. It\u2019s deeply rooted in racism and sexuality throughout history. Way back in ancient times, Greeks and Romans associated big penises with being vulgar or \u201canimalistic\u201d and smaller ones with intellect and civility. (Yes, in a bizarre twist, small used to be \u201cin\u201d \u2013 at least among uppity aristocrats.) European explorers later carried these notions overseas. When they encountered different peoples in Africa and elsewhere, they exaggerated tales of men with outrageously large genitals.<\/p>\n

These tall tales weren\u2019t just locker-room gossip, they served an ugly agenda.\u00a0As one historian notes, colonizers used such accounts to paint other races as sexually savage and themselves as \u201ccivilized.\u201d Johnson says, we need to drop the\u00a0stereotype, which he argues, continues to this day, particularly\u00a0in the adult film industry.<\/p>\n

During the Atlantic slave trade era, the stereotype took on a life of its own in America\u2019s racist imagination. Enslavers and white supremacists crafted the \u201cMandingo\u201d or \u201cBlack Buck\u201d caricature portraying Black men as brutish, hypersexual beasts with insatiable lust and tripod-sized endowments.<\/p>\n

Johnson goes on to explain that many of the adult movies with Black men in starring roles use racial themes in the title and often as the flick\u2019s primary selling point. In his mind, \u201cthe idea of the salacious Black male and his monster cock has been used to perpetuate the objectification and brutality of African American men.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also, people need to get over their obsession with penis-size.<\/p>\n

Science vs. stereotype: No, Black men aren\u2019t \u201cnaturally\u201d bigger<\/h2>\n

If this myth were true, we\u2019d expect credible scientific studies to show Black men have significantly larger average penis sizes than other groups. They don\u2019t. Scientists have measured thousands of men across races, and there\u2019s simply no reliable evidence of any race-based size difference.<\/p>\n

\u201cContrary to popular belief, human males are the best endowed of the hominids, proportionate to body size,\u201d he writes. \u201cThe average human penis size is five inches. If men were not bombarded with a barrage of messages preaching their inadequacy, insecurities related to the male genitalia would be minimal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bottom line: Penis size is highly individual, not racial. And even if (hypothetically) one\u00a0did<\/em>\u00a0find slight differences somewhere, it wouldn\u2019t justify the sweeping claim that \u201call Black men have big dicks.\u201d Human bodies are far too diverse for that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
