Cellulite is a\u00a0acute<\/span>\u00a0bacterial<\/span>\u00a0infection<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0dermis<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0subcutaneous<\/span>\u00a0skin tissues. It is commonly caused by anyone\u00a0Streptococcus pyogenes<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Staphylococcus aureus.<\/em>\u00a0Cellulite presents as an enlarged area of red, warm, swollen and tender skin. Cellulite can occur anywhere on the body, but is most often seen on the lower leg. May be accompanied by\u00a0lymphangitis<\/span>, which appears as a red streak after\u00a0lymphatic<\/span>\u00a0ships to local\u00a0lymph node<\/span>\u00a0(which can also be tender and enlarged).<\/p>\n

The signs of cellulite are nonspecific and the diagnosis is based primarily on the patient’s medical history and physical examination. A number of skin conditions can “mimic” cellulite, and about 30% of cellulite cases are misdiagnosed. Distinguishing between cellulite and these simulating conditions is important to avoid unnecessary treatments and complications, and to speed up proper treatment.<\/p>\n

<\/span>What are the clinical characteristics of cellulite?<\/h2>\n

<\/span>Unilateral<\/span>\u00a0distribution<\/span>\u00a0in the lower leg<\/h3>\n

Cellulite of the legs is almost always unilateral.\u00a0Bilateral<\/span>\u00a0Cellulite distribution rarely occurs, usually as a result of an underlying condition, such as lymphedema. The bilateral distribution of a\u00a0eruption<\/span>\u00a0In the absence of other symptoms of cellulite, an alternative diagnosis should be sought.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Response to treatment<\/h3>\n

If not treated, cellulite will progress rapidly. If appropriate antibiotics are started, cellulite should respond within hours to days. Lack of response suggests an alternative diagnosis.<\/p>\n
