The campus was already alive when we arrived.<\/p>\n

White folding chairs spread across the lawn in clean rows.<\/p>\n

Faculty members in velvet-trimmed robes crossed the stage like dark birds.<\/p>\n

Families walked under the pale blue sky with flowers wrapped in tissue paper and phones held high, ready to turn joy into proof.<\/p>\n

I stood for a moment beside the parking lot and let myself take it in.<\/p>\n

This was the day I had pictured while working the overnight desk at the medical center.<\/p>\n

This was the day I had imagined while clipping coupons at the kitchen table and pretending I was not counting the same twenty-dollar bill twice.<\/p>\n

This was the day I carried in my head when Daniel came home from high school exhausted, certain he was not good enough for the colleges on his list.<\/p>\n

I had told him then, \u201cWe will find a way.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had said it before I knew what it would cost.<\/p>\n

Near the science building, the photographer began arranging everyone for pictures.<\/p>\n

Daniel with Valerie first.<\/p>\n

Then Daniel with Valerie and her parents.<\/p>\n

Then Daniel with Beatrice alone because, she said, they had become very close during his final year.<\/p>\n

I waited with my purse over my wrist.<\/p>\n

At one point, Valerie turned and asked, \u201cShould we get one with your mom?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s eyes flicked toward me, then toward Beatrice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the minute became another pose, and then another adjustment, and then a group of Daniel\u2019s friends arrived.<\/p>\n

Someone handed him a bouquet.<\/p>\n

Someone else asked about the graduate fellowship he had been offered.<\/p>\n

Beatrice placed one hand at his back, guiding him toward better light.<\/p>\n

I watched from beside a brick planter full of red geraniums.<\/p>\n

A woman I did not know smiled at me and said, \u201cYour son?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe looks so proud.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost answered, \u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n

But my throat closed before I could.<\/p>\n

When the announcement came for graduates to form the procession, everyone began moving toward the walkway near the stage.<\/p>\n

Daniel straightened his cap.<\/p>\n

I stepped closer, ready to walk beside him, ready for the small ceremonial moment that had been described in the family instructions emailed the week before.<\/p>\n

One family member could accompany each honor graduate to the front seating area.<\/p>\n

I had read that line so many times.<\/p>\n

Daniel turned to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can head to your seat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was walking in with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked uncomfortable, but not surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, I just think it\u2019ll be better if you sit with everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone else?\u201d<\/p>\n

His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t make this hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words were quiet, but they reached places in me I had kept carefully covered.<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, he looked past me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeatrice,\u201d he called.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you walk in with me?\u201d<\/p>\n

She put one hand to her chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Daniel.<\/p>\n

I would be honored.\u201d<\/p>\n

Valerie\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n

Just slightly.<\/p>\n

Her smile dropped, then returned in a smaller shape.<\/p>\n

I waited for Daniel to look at me again.<\/p>\n

He did not.<\/p>\n

So I nodded once and stepped away.<\/p>\n
