You can check out other videos while we get it together.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vod-loading-player-container\" data-v-0ece8dec=\"\">\n<div class=\"buffering-group\" data-v-0ece8dec=\"\">\n<div class=\"ui-buffering-overlay-indicator\" data-v-0ece8dec=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ui-buffering-overlay-indicator\" data-v-0ece8dec=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ui-buffering-overlay-indicator\" data-v-0ece8dec=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"info\" data-v-4292be72=\"\">\n<div class=\"caption\" data-v-4292be72=\"\">\n<p data-v-4292be72=\"\">Dr. Ko Un Park, a surgical oncologist at OSU\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Center, discusses the signs of inflammatory breast cancer, treatment, and other things to know about the rare, yet deadly form of the disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><span class=\"dateline\"><strong>COLUMBUS, Ohio<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span>While self-exams are important to help identify signs of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox7austin.com\/tag\/health\/cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breast cancer<\/a>, not all forms begin with a lump, including a particularly aggressive type of the disease known as inflammatory breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">In fact, most women are unaware of the unusual signs and symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer, which can include redness of the breast, thickening of the skin, or one breast feeling warmer and heavier than the other, according to a new national U.S. survey conducted just ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article-thumbnails-js\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad gpt\" data-ad-pos=\"inread\" data-ad-size=\"1x1\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><\/div>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">The deadly yet rare form of the disease doesn\u2019t look like typical breast cancer because it frequently doesn&#8217;t cause a breast lump, and it is not commonly picked up by a mammogram,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breast-cancer\/about\/types-of-breast-cancer\/inflammatory-breast-cancer.html\">according to the American Cancer Society<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theibcnetwork.org\/what-is-ibc\/\">the IBC Network Foundation,<\/a>\u00a0which offers research and support for patients.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">It also tends to grow and spread more quickly compared to other types of cancer, often in a matter of days or weeks.<\/p>\n<div data-v-871f4c88=\"\">\n<div class=\"credible\" data-unit-credible=\";;\" data-in-article=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"full-width-image\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.foxtv.com\/static.fox35orlando.com\/www.fox35orlando.com\/content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/932\/524\/GettyImages-1347465707.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"Free Mammograms For International Breast Cancer Day\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"info\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\">\n<p data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"><span data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\">FILE &#8211; A woman with the help of a nurse gets a mammogram on International Breast Cancer Day on Oct. 19, 2021, in Seville, Andalusia, Spain. (Photo By Eduardo Briones\/Europa Press via Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Patients are Stage III or Stage IV when diagnosed, depending on whether cancer cells have spread only to nearby lymph nodes or to other tissues as well.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Inflammatory breast cancer only represents 1% to 5% of all breast cancers in the United States. And because it\u2019s so rare, patients with symptoms like tenderness, redness, warmth, and itching are often misdiagnosed as having a breast infection or inflammation, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breast-cancer\/non-cancerous-breast-conditions\/mastitis.html\">mastitis for those breastfeeding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;The main difference is, number one, inflammatory breast cancer will not improve with antibiotics,&#8221; said Dr. Ko Un Park, surgical oncologist at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.osu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio State University\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Center &#8211; The James<\/a>. &#8220;Number two, when we do mammograms or other imaging workups, we find an abnormality and ultimately the biopsy will demonstrate cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox7austin.com\/news\/twin-sisters-diagnosed-with-breast-cancer-months-apart\"><strong>Twin sisters diagnosed with breast cancer months apart<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Only 44% would flag redness as possible sign<\/h2>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">To better understand women\u2019s awareness of the disease, the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center commissioned the national survey last month of 2,044 U.S. adults \u2014 including 1,100 women.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">It found that four in five women (78%) recognize a lump in the breast as a sign of breast cancer. However, less than half of women would flag redness of the breast (44%), pitting\/thickening of the skin (44%), or one breast feeling warmer or heavier than the other (34%) as possible symptoms of breast cancer \u2014 and specifically, inflammatory breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">The term &#8220;inflammatory breast cancer&#8221; comes from the symptoms of breast inflammation, which occurs due to cancer cells blocking lymph vessels in the skin and causing the breast to look &#8220;inflamed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer<\/h2>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Inflammatory breast cancer can occur in any part of the breast, OSU\u2019s experts say. The signs of inflammatory breast cancer include:<\/p>\n<ul data-v-03e8ff79=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\">\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\"><span data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">an orange peel-like texture or dimpling of skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\"><span data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">feeling of heaviness<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\"><span data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">tightening of the skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\"><span data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">engorgement of the breast<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"article-ct\" data-v-03e8ff79=\"\"><span data-v-03e8ff79=\"\">infection-like redness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;These changes are not subtle,&#8221; Park, who leads a new Inflammatory Breast Cancer Program at OSU, told FOX Television Stations. &#8220;It\u2019s not like a small mosquito bite.. or a rash that can sometimes occur in the breast. These are large changes that occur on at least a third of the breast, and these are rapidly progressing changes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Park said patients often say they noticed changes as quickly as overnight in the breast.<\/p>\n<div class=\"full-width-image\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.foxtv.com\/static.fox35orlando.com\/www.fox35orlando.com\/content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/932\/524\/inflammatory-breast-cancer-symptoms.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"inflammatory-breast-cancer-symptoms.jpg\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"info\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\">\n<p data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"><span data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\">An image shows some symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer. (Credit: IBC Network Foundation)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Park noted that even in the medical community, physicians and providers are not accustomed to thinking about a red breast as a sign associated with inflammatory breast cancer because it is such a rare disease.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Park, along with breast radiologist Dr. Amy Kerger, lead a new inflammatory breast cancer program at OSU\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Center.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;One of the common things that we hear from patients is that they had to advocate for themselves that this does not seem like it&#8217;s improving with antibiotics,&#8221; Park said, noting that the goal of the new inflammatory breast cancer program at OSU is to increase awareness of the disease and expedite diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"slideshow\" data-v-2f4c2a10=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\">\n<div class=\"VueCarousel\" data-v-2f4c2a10=\"\">\n<div class=\"VueCarousel-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"VueCarousel-inner\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"VueCarousel-navigation\" data-v-9d1c1934=\"\"><a class=\"VueCarousel-navigation-button VueCarousel-navigation-prev VueCarousel-navigation--disabled\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox35orlando.com\/news\/inflammatory-breast-cancer-symptoms-diagnosis-women-survey#\" data-v-9d1c1934=\"\">\u25c0\ufe0e<\/a><a class=\"VueCarousel-navigation-button VueCarousel-navigation-next\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox35orlando.com\/news\/inflammatory-breast-cancer-symptoms-diagnosis-women-survey#\" data-v-9d1c1934=\"\">\u25b6\ufe0e<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-info\" data-v-2f4c2a10=\"\">\n<div class=\"slide-count\">Image 1 of 4<\/p>\n<div class=\"slide-toggle\">\u25bc<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-summary\">\n<p>Splotchy skin, irritation, and bumps can appear at the onset of inflammatory breast cancer. (Credit: IBC Network Foundation)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">There are no known specific genetic predisposition genes that predict inflammatory breast cancer. However, there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breast-cancer\/risk-and-prevention\/breast-cancer-risk-factors-you-cannot-change.html#:~:text=BRCA1%20and%20BRCA2%3A%20The%20most,which%20can%20lead%20to%20cancer.\">genes known to increase the risk of breast cancer<\/a>\u00a0that may also increase the risk of this form of the disease, including the inherited mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">While inflammatory breast cancer has a historically reported five-year survival rate of around 40%, advances in care have helped patients live longer.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Recent studies have shown that with the right treatment, the five-year survival rate is closer to 70% for Stage III patients and up to 50% for newly diagnosed Stage IV patients, according to the University of Texas\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancer-types\/inflammatory-breast-cancer.html\">MD Anderson<\/a>, which also has a cancer clinic dedicated to the treatment inflammatory breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">It also runs clinical trials for all stages of the disease, using immunotherapy, new targeted therapy regimens, and new drug combinations.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Women should \u2018be their own advocate\u2019<\/h2>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Inflammatory breast cancer tends to occur in women younger than age 40, according to the American Cancer Society. Black women appear to develop the disease more often than white women, and it\u2019s also more common among those who are overweight or obese.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">But Park emphasized that this form only accounts for just a small percentage of all breast cancers.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;Inflammatory breast cancer, fortunately, is a rare disease \u2014 and so patients do not need to panic if they experience a red breast. They seek the appropriate care and often times it is a breast infection or a rash that will improve,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">But if the improvement doesn\u2019t occur in a few weeks, and the changes in the breast seem to worsen, Park said patients should advocate for themselves and if needed, seek out care at a specialized center to ensure they\u2019re appropriately diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;I think it&#8217;s really important for women to be their own advocate.
